Breast cancer is a diagnosis that can feel overwhelming, but many women find strength and purpose through their journeys. Here, we share the inspiring stories of survivors who faced this challenge with courage and resilience.
Susan Fong: Embracing Life After Diagnosis
When Susan Fong was diagnosed with breast cancer over 13 years ago, a moment that filled her with fear and uncertainty. “I thought I was going to die,” she recalls. Her diagnosis came as a shock after a mammogram, but with her husband's unwavering support and the comfort of her family, she found inner strength.
Her husband introduced her to a breast cancer center run by an NGO, where Susan met other survivors. Hearing their stories, especially from women who had battled breast cancer more than once, made her realize her situation was manageable. Susan also learned Chinese calligraphy from a fellow survivor, channeling her newfound strength into creativity. Today, she runs a small business, painting jute bags that she sells at charity booths organized by NCSM, donating part of her proceeds to the cause. Her advice to others: “ Do early checkups and mammograms.”
Gim: Finding Strength in Positivity
Gim’s journey began when she unexpectedly weight loss that prompted her to visit the doctor. “I think I acted quickly,” she reflects. Soon after, she was told she needed an operation. While the surgery went smoothly, chemotherapy followed was more challenging. “I’m glad that I made it through,” she shares. Her approach to life after cancer is simple— “Just to live fully; every day is important.” Throughout her treatment, her family members and relatives were incredibly supportive, helping her stay positive. Gim's advice for others is to seek the right channels for treatment, including cancer support groups, and to lean on those who care for you.
Janet: Family as a Pillar of Support
Janet's diagnosis came five years after her second sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, prompting her to finally get for a mammogram. “I was okay with it because my sisters had gone through it,” she reflects. Fortunately, her cancer was detected earlier, at stage one, so she only needed to take a hormone tablet called Hemosyfan for five years.
With plenty of mental, emotional, and moral support, she felt well-equipped to face the challenges. Her eldest sister even stayed with her for a month to cook and take care of her during recovery. Janet credits her family for helping her avoid falling into depression. “My dream is to live as long as I can. I have three daughters, and I want to see my grandchildren. I also wish to travel,” she shares. Her outlook on life is clear: “Cancer is just another illness. My catchphrase is YOLO—You Only Live Once.” She emphasizes the importance of embracing life, no matter the circumstances.
Yvonne: The Power of Juggling
Yvonne discovered her diagnosis when she underwent a test that revealed quite high results, but her main concern, however was her children - especially her son with autism. Despite juggling the challenges of an unhealthy relationship, her children became her strength during this difficult time. “I’m grateful that I made it through,” she reflects, especially considering that her sister and father both died from cancer. Now, she has already accomplished her dreams and goals, with her children having graduated from university. Her daughter is married and living in Germany. Yvonne's advice to others facing similar battles is simple: “Just keep your chin up and go with the flow.”
Nina: Acceptance and Strength
Nina’s journey with breast cancer began unexpectedly while she was busy planning her child's wedding. After conducting a self-examination, she sought a diagnosis, which led to a biopsy. At that time, she also discovered that she was pregnant at the age of 47, but unfortunately, she faced a miscarriage. Initially diagnosed with early-stage cancer, further tests revealed it had advanced to stage 2 when lymph nodes in her armpit showed that the cancer had spread. “If we had been more relaxed, it could have escalated to stage 3 or 4 quickly,” she reflects.
Her motivation to fight comes from her family —her children, ailing mother, and a supportive husband—Nina tackled her treatment with unwavering support from her family. “I adhered to my doctor’s guidance,” she explains. Despite the hurdles, she took pride in maintaining her beauty and a positive outlook throughout her journey. “I aspire to become well-known, even though I have cancer,” she declares. Her message to others is clear: “Stay positive; cancer isn’t the end, and early detection can save lives.”
Po: Conquering Fear and Embracing Life
Po’s journey began with a concerning symptom—a bloody discharge from her nipple—that led to a diagnosis that made her fear for her life at just 30 years old. The emotional challenges were overwhelming, especially as she lost her 12-year-old cat the same week she was diagnosed, followed by her mother to colon cancer just four months later. “I was diagnosed with cancer and lost two of the closest beings in my life,” she reflects.
Through mind therapy, she learned to cope with her emotions and found the strength to be healthy for her husband and father. “Cancer has taught me a very important lesson—not to take my health for granted,” she shares. Now, Po focuses on cherishing every moment with her family, knowing that “tomorrow isn’t promised.” Her advice to others facing a diagnosis is clear: “Instead of focusing on the fear, take action and take care of your health.
